Garden Descriptions 2016

1 - “Orange Colored Sky”

Don’t be green with envy when you see this lush- green-on-green palate. A carpet of emerald green grass is bordered by an undulating garden bed filled with ferns and hints of color provided by purple statice and agapanthus. A coral tree stands as a bold burst of vibrant red-orange when in bloom. The outdoor patio provides plenty of hardscape for entertaining or for a lazy day of just lounging.

                                                     2 - “A Weaver of Dreams”

Once landscaped with areas of lawn and ivy covering the hillside, this garden is now a picturesque example of drought tolerant with a variety of flourishing greenery and recycled hardscape commonly called urbanite. A living wall of Texas privet reveals a hilltop view and flagstone walkways laced with dymondia, allowing guests to explore the enchantment of this yard and a creatively terraced hillside.

3 - “Mother Nature and Father Time”

Experience the forest to the tropics in this garden Shangri-la. Enjoy a woodland feast for the eyes, filled with stately palms, spreading ferns, and a giant redwood that reaches skyward. Stepping-stone pathways lead you through lush vegetation that gets its water from a drip irrigation system. Below, a recirculating stream empties into a Koi pond filled with mature fish. A converted garage serves as a wood-working shed.

4 - ”Return to Paradise”

The front of this villa features drought tolerant plantings accented by touches of cobalt-blue tile,  while the back is a lush botanical  wonderland.   A railroad tie stairway cascades through extravagant foliage, such as an African tulip tree with tangerine-colored flowers, a castor bean tree, a family of palms surrounded by roses, azaleas, succulents, lavender, and a variegated-leaf ginger plant. (A garden favorite from our 2006 tour.)

5 - “Ramblin’ Rose”

This  Free Vendor Fair is filled with great works of art as far as the eyes can see.  Don’t miss the Plant and Pot Swap and Potting Bar.

 6 - “Lush Life“

Upon entry one is struck by this yard’s simple elegance. An arbor with flowing sheer panels covered by draping string of hearts succulent add an air of drama. Centered in the Mediterranean styled courtyard stands a three-tiered fountain edged by garden beds that hold ti plant, bird of paradise, split leaf philodendron, and a pink pepper tree along with three fruit bearing trees—fig, avocado, and lime. Toward the back is a casita and cozy coop for the resident fowl.

A cobalt blue backdrop sets the mood for this drought-tolerant, animal friendly, intimate outdoor space.  The jasmine covered pergola provides shade for tranquil seating areas enhanced by plantings of paddle cactus, Rose of Sharon, palms and potted ficus. Ethnic art and a surfboard reflect the homeowner’s artistic culture and Southern California style.

   8 - “Nature Boy”

The distinctive front yard, recently installed by the homeowner is defined by the views it conceives. It was transposed into drought tolerant showing shades and textures of rocks and pebbles along with a variety of succulents. This self-gardener has created a center island in the rear garden to showcase a large angel trumpet tree, palms and flax with adjacent beds of fruit trees, vegetables, and accent sculptures. A jardin du jour.

9 - “Unforgettable”

This ultimate entertainment yard, boasts five rooms with a view. A waterfall feature framed by palms empties into a lily pad pond encircled by river rock.
